What I Liked About It:

  • It's Free: You can try all AI features without paying a cent.

  • AI Detector: Built-in AI detection system accepts both PDF uploads and direct text input.

  • Literature Review Toolkit: Easy to analyze large volumes of scientific literature, summarize key findings, and provide helpful insights.

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Export Restriction: Can't export your document unless you pay for a subscription.

  • Complex Interface: A cluttered user interface makes it hard to use.

  • Poor AI Writing: AI writes low-quality robotic text that doesn't meet research standards.

I put SciSpace through rigorous testing to answer the questions that matter to researchers and students. This review goes through real-world academic use cases, testing everything from research assistance to AI writing capabilities.

By the end, you'll have a clear picture of whether this tool deserves a place in your toolkit or not. If you're ready, let's dive into it!

What Is SciSpace?

A research platform that uses AI to help academics search through 270M+ papers, understand complex research, generate citations, and analyze PDFs with AI assistance.

SciSpace Features

SciSpace claims to transform how you interact with scientific literature and my in-depth testing revealed some surprising findings. From handling complex academic texts to managing citations, I've put every feature through its paces to help you decide if it's worth your time and money.

Keep reading to discover what worked, what didn't, and whether this AI research assistant deserves a spot in your academic toolkit.

1. Research Paper Integration

SciSpace lets you upload multiple papers at once and does something pretty useful - it creates an instant TL;DR summary for each one. In my testing across several academic papers, this saved me hours of initial reading time.

You can also ask questions about your papers and get answers backed by specific references. For example, when I uploaded papers about LLMs, I could ask "What finding can I use from this paper?" and get responses pointing to exact sections.

This means no more searching or scrolling through endless pages.

2. Outline Builder

When I tested this for my research paper, the generated outline had a clear progression from introduction through methodology to conclusion.

The outlines are very basic though - you only get section headings without any talking points or descriptions. This means you'll need to figure out the specific content for each section yourself.

You're also stuck with what you get - there's no way to expand sections or add new ones to the generated outline.

3. AI Writing

Autocomplete continues your text and automatically adds citations. However, when I tested it, it produced long-winded passages that often strayed from the main point.

The writing quality itself needs significant editing. When I asked it to write a conclusion, this is what I got.

The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) marks a significant paradigm shift in the landscape of academic writing and research. (Generated by SciSpace)

The paraphrasing tool also falls short - it changes your writing style completely. If you've spent time crafting your academic voice, you'll need to heavily edit the paraphrased sections to match your style.

4. Citation Management

Adding citations in SciSpace is straightforward - you can find and insert them with just a few clicks. During my testing, I could quickly add, edit, or remove citations whenever needed.

SciSpace citations

SciSpace citations

You can switch between different citation styles across your entire document in one go. This saved me time when I needed to change all citations from APA to MLA format.

The bibliography also gets generated automatically as you add citations, but it's only available with a paid subscription.

5. Grammar & Style Check

The grammar and style check feature is very limited. All you can do is select text and use the "AI fix grammar" command.

SciSpace fix grammar

There's no real-time grammar checking, spelling corrections, or style suggestions as you write. This means you'll need to actively select and check each section of text manually.

6. Multi Language Support

SciSpace lets you set a default language for your document, and all AI features will work in that language. This means you can write, edit, and use AI tools without switching back and forth between languages.

The tool supports 80 different languages, which covers most academic writing needs you might have.

7. Export Options

To export your document from SciSpace, you'll need a paid subscription - there's no free export option available.

Once subscribed, you can export to PDF or Word formats. During my testing, both the citations and formatting carried over perfectly to the exported files.

The bibliography maintains its format in the exported document, so you won't need to fix any reference formatting after exporting.

8. AI Detector

SciSpace comes with an AI detection tool that tells you exactly how your paper will do against institutional AI detection tools. You can simply run your completed paper through the checker before submission, and it will instantly tell you if any sections might trigger AI detection flags.

This eliminates the stress of wondering whether your paper might get flagged, letting you submit your work with complete confidence.

SciSpace Pricing

    • I have been using SciSpace for quite some time, but it is one of the worst experiences I have ever had with any tool. The AI results are pathetic, general, and repetitive. The customer support is extremely bad—or even worse (I don’t have words to explain).
